Officience: closer to a neutral carbon footprint?

 

After having launched the bamboo planting project in Phu An-Binh Duong village on 30 June 2013 as part of GreenDay 2, Officience took a second look at bamboo, this time with a more theoretical approach, on Green Day 3. The day was dedicated to investigating the carbon impact of the plantation.

A recognised expert in calculating carbon footprints

In order to better measure the impacts of carbon on the environment and understanding its implications, Mrs My Hanh(director of Phu An Bamboo Village and Bamboo Planting Project partner) offered us the chance to attend a specialcourse on calculating carbon impact. The lecture was given by Dr.Vien Ngoc Nam, Associate Professor at Nông Lâm University in Hô Chi Minh City (Agro-forestry University). Dr Nam is particularly well known for his work in the Mekong mangrove and his thesis on this subject (Carbon contribution of above ground biomass of Rhizophora apiculata blume in the south of Vietnam). He is an international expert on carbon calculation.

The session took place at Professor Nam’s house close to Thu Duc. We attended the session along with 4 membersof the Bamboo Planting Project: Eric LLOUQUET, Mélissa COURTEIX, Yen Khang NGUYEN TRAN, Thao DO.

Several students from Nông Lâm University were also there. In addition, some partners and friends from the BambooVillage were present: Dr Vivi and Dr An in particular. The atmosphere was studious and attentive; we had woken up at the crack of dawn to attend this 3-hour presentation exclusively in Vietnamese. We all felt like we had gone back to school!

A special methodology

We attended this course for one very specific reason: to learn how to calculate the quantity of carbon captured byeach tree, and in particular by each bamboo plant. Dr Nam showed us the methodology for the universal formula forcalculating the impact of carbon.

• Methods for measuring and taking samples in the field

• 6 ways to calculate the quantity of carbon absorbed

• 3 levels of carbon calculation

• 3 main factors that affect calculation

• Units of CO2 Eq in commerce on the market by REDD+

Scientific formulas and concrete applications

Stored carbon = carbon density x surface

Eq CO2 = (44/12) x Eq C (*)

C = 0.47 * Biomass (wood density)

C = 0.37 * Biomass (litter)

How can these formulas be applied?

Using these formulas are essential for calculating the quantity of CO2 retained by bamboo. The idea is to plant enough bamboo to exactly compensate for our annual carbon emissions. Ultimately, we are aiming to achieve a neutral carbon footprint.

Our calculations still need some refinement before we can reveal the results of our 2012-2013 carbon footprint. However, we are advancing rapidly and we have already implemented an interactive table which allows us to measure the quantity of carbon emitted daily by Officience and also to indicate the number of bamboo plants needed to compensate for this and become carbon neutral.
