Today, TMA has flourished under her visionary leadership, becoming one of Vietnam’s largest offshore software providers. With over 4,000 employees and offices spanning multiple countries, TMA is a testament to Ms. Bui’s unwavering determination and business acumen.

Her accomplishments have been noticed. Ms. Bui has been honored with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Gold Medal for Software Outsourcing, recognition as one of the Top 10 Industry 4.0 Companies in Vietnam, and the esteemed Women Entrepreneur Award by Forbes Vietnam.

She’s the brilliant CEO and mastermind behind Dutycast Technology, a rising star in Vietnam’s cross-border e-commerce platform. With Dutycast, you can shop your heart out from online retailers in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, and beyond!

But that’s not all. Hoa has earned some serious street cred in the tech industry. She’s been recognized as one of the Top 50 Tech Women in Norway and has also snagged a spot among the Top 50 most talented female leaders in the Asia-Pacific region. Talk about impressive!

When asked about her achievements, she humbly states, “I am pleased to use my background to help build a strong international female leadership system that inspires young people and promotes the position of women in business and society.”

Recently, she graced the pages of Forbes Vietnam’s March 2022 issue, recognized as one of the top 20 female leaders in the professional realm. She was one of a few individuals to receive the Certificate of Merit from the Vietnamese Prime Minister as well.

Recalling a hard time at the start of her career when choosing, she shares, “It seemed like a choice against the majority. At that time, with a very humble start, I set a goal for myself to overcome the prejudices of society and my family, to venture into a difficult but attractive field like IT.”

Ms. Van Dinh Hong Vu – The true essence of a changemaker

Born in 1985 in the vibrant city of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, she embarked on a path of passion and purpose. Graduating from the Foreign Trade University with a bachelor’s degree in international business, she set her sights on making a difference in the world.

Driven by her unwavering commitment to education and social impact, she co-founded ELSA in 2015. This revolutionary AI language platform has transformed the language learning experience for non-native speakers, garnering a staggering user base of over 13 million individuals across 100 countries.

Recognized as one of the 20 most inspirational women on Forbes Vietnam’s esteemed list, she continues to inspire and empower women in the field of technology. With a resolute determination, she boldly declared, “I have accumulated a decade’s worth of management knowledge and talent. It’s time for me to pursue my passions in the realms of technology and education.”

Latest data on Women in Vietnam Tech

Women in Vietnam Tech - Closing the Gender Gap

Vietnam’s digital economy contributed approximately 14.26% to the total GDP in 2022 and is projected to grow at a rate of 8.9% from 2022 to 2026, which has witnessed notable developments in its tech sector.  Moreover, Vietnam has made significant progress in promoting gender equality, moving up four places to rank 83rd in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2022. But more work ahead…

Why Women in Tech?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in STEM occupations has grown 79 percent in the past three decades and is projected to grow an additional 11 percent from 2020 to 2030.

75% of jobs globally will require STEM skills by 2050

A recent study by the World Economic Forum found that 75% of jobs globally will require STEM skills by 2050. This is due to the rapid growth of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and big data.

Low- and middle-income countries have lost 1 trillion USD in GDP over the past decade due to women’s exclusion from the digital world. This loss is expected to increase to 1.5 trillion USD by 2025 if no action is taken. Another piece of research from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggests that closing the gender gap can have a significant economic impact, potentially increasing a country’s GDP by an average of 35%.

Closing the gender gap can increase a country's GDP by an average of 35%

These statistics underscore the importance of promoting gender equality, particularly in the digital economy, in order to unlock women’s untapped potential and contribute to Vietnam’s overall economic prosperity.

Latest data on Women in Vietnam Tech

Vietnamese women represent about 37% in STEM

The gender gap in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) industry workforce in Vietnam remains a pressing issue, as women currently represent only about 37% of the sector, which is higher than the global average of 25%, according to data from the International Labor Organization.

The low proportion of women in the STEM industry reflects a broader trend of gender disparity in education and career opportunities. In Vietnam, the percentage of women who successfully complete education in STEM fields stands at 36.5%. While progress has been made in recent years to encourage girls and young women to pursue STEM education, significant barriers still hinder their entry and advancement in these fields.

4/5 of working-age women in Vietnam are engaged in low-skilled or unskilled work

Nearly four-fifths of working-age women in Vietnam are engaged in low-skilled or unskilled work. As per the General Statistics Office (GSO), the training rate for male workers stands at 25%, whereas for female workers, it is 20%, indicating a disparity in training opportunities between genders. These statistics highlight the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the challenges faced by women in the labor market and the potential economic impact of job losses in key industries.

Vietnamese women frequently face challenges that lead them to leave their jobs at key stages of their careers. This issue has been explored in a previous BCG publication on diversity in Southeast Asia. The reasons behind this trend are multifaceted and stem from deeply ingrained issues.

Women cannot pursue a long-term tech career because of family responsibilities

13% of women cannot pursue a long-term tech career because of family responsibilities. 11% say that they find it difficult to seek advancement opportunities. Besides, 40% of organizations don’t have a retention program for women.

Push them away

To improve the situation of women in tech, companies and policymakers need to take a targeted approach that focuses on the critical junctures in a career. A study by BCG SEA Women identified three such moments, along with the key influences that have the biggest effect on women at each juncture:

1. Choosing to pursue higher education in technology

2. Selecting the first job

3. Deciding to remain in a technology career

This study also developed a menu of initiatives that can boost progress for women at each of the three moments.

How do Payment Apps keep your information safe and sound?

How Payment Apps keep your information safe and sound

I’m Quang – a Mobile app developer, specializing in iOS. Today, I spent 30 minutes reading “How Apple Pay works under the hood?” by Prashant Ram. I am excited to share this knowledge right away. And I will try to explain it in the simplest way.

How Apple Pay supports your security

  • Whenever you add your card to your phone (1), Apple passes the info to your bank – Issuer Bank (2). Then, the bank returns a unique identifier – DAN. Your phone will store DAN on a special hardware chip – Secure Element (3)
  • If you make a payment, Secure Element will generate the one-time codes (Dynamic CVV & Dynamic Cryptogram) and send them to the POS machine (4). The POS passes to the seller’s bank (Merchant Bank) together with your DAN (5). After the Merchant Bank conveys the request to the Issuer Bank, your payment is approved (6). Find out what really happens in step 6 here.
How Google Pay supports your security

So what?

1. Apple doesn’t store your info, they pass it to the bank.

2. By using DAN, no one except your bank owns your card information.

3. Dynamic CVV cannot be reused, even if it is captured by a 3rd party.

4. Secure Element is physically isolated from your device, making it very difficult for hackers.

Google Pay does this a bit differently

  • Whenever you add your card to your phone (1), Google Server receives the info (2), gets verification from your bank (3) and returns an identifier (Payment Token) to your phone (4).
  • If you make a payment, your phone passes the Dynamic CVV, Dynamic Cryptogram and Payment Token to the POS machine (5). The POS passes them to the Merchant Bank (6). After the validation process between Merchant Bank and Issuer Bank (7), Google Server will be informed (8).
How Google Pay supports your security

So what?

1. Both Apple & Google are secure, just different approaches

2. By recording your purchase on the server, Google could theoretically track your spending habits

3. Apple controls both software & hardware (e.g., Secure Element), that’s why they offer a more comprehensive solution

Apple Pay v.s Google Pay

Apple says their products are designed to protect your privacy, noting the following on their website: “At Apple, we believe privacy is a fundamental human right.” This also raises the question for me of whether Google uses private information to make money. Could anyone answer this?

12 tips to make your website more inclusive

12 tips to make your website more inclusive

Last weekend, Bich – our head of design, tried to help her 60yo aunt from afar, to book a slot with the doctor. During the hour, dozens of OTPs were sent, but the elderly lady missed all of them because they quickly expired after a minute. That’s when our discussion broke out this Monday. Is it realistic to build an accessible website for everyone? Why? And how? After researching the whole week, we realize this is feasible, helpful for people, and beneficial to businesses as well. So we want to share this with you.

In this blog:
Why inclusive web
Vision issues
Hearing issues
Physical issues
Intellectual issues

Why inclusive web design matters:

  • Ethics and morals:
    • According to WHO, an estimated 1.3 billion people experience significant disability in 2023. This represents 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in 6 of us.
    • In a study by WebAIM, 98.1% of homepages analyzed had at least one WCAG 2.0 failure, making the website inaccessible to individuals with disabilities.
  • Business benefits:
    • People with disabilities represent a significant market segment, with a combined disposable income of more than $8 trillion.
    • A study by the UK Government found that 71% of people with disabilities will leave a website immediately if it is not accessible, and 82% will not return to the site.
    • In a case study by Microsoft, the company estimated that the accessible design of their Xbox Adaptive Controller, which was designed specifically for gamers with disabilities, generated $4.6 million in incremental revenue in its first year.
  • Legal compliance
    • In the US, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that places of public accommodation, including websites, be accessible to individuals with disabilities. In
    • 2019, Guillermo Robles, a blind man, filed a lawsuit against Domino’s Pizza for not providing an accessible website and won the case.

If you’re also a digital designer like us, a start-up selling something online, or even an aged business enhancing your website, take a 10-minute glance at 12 tips below, and see what you could apply for customers with different disabilities.

Vision issues

Vision issues refer to any condition that affects an individual’s ability to see or perceive visual information such as partial or complete blindness, low vision, or color blindness. Consider these suggestions to cater to their needs:

12 tips to make your website more inclusive - Vision issues
  1. Make text readable: Use a font size of 16 points or larger, and avoid using script or cursive fonts. Avoid using text in image format as screen readers cannot read it. It’s also recommended to maintain a high-contrast level, at least 4.5:1 between text and background. _ Bich – Creative Tribe Leader
  2. Select the Captcha: Captcha typically involves presenting users with a visual challenge, like defining distorted text or images to prove that they are human. To prevent people with vision impairment from being a robot, provide another technique to verify users such as audio challenges or math challenges as well. _ Truc – UX/UI designer
  3. Use audio: It provides an alternative way to access the content. Besides creating audio content ourselves, why don’t we try to add the Text-to-Speech API that converts written text into spoken words? Some popular providers include Google Text-to-Speech, Amazon Polly, Microsoft Text-to-Speech,… _ Tien – Graphic designer

Hearing issues

Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing face challenges accessing audio content on websites and applications. Therefore, here are some tips for designing for people with hearing impairments:

12 tips to make your website more inclusive - Hearing issues
  1. Prevent jump scare: Some individuals with hearing impairments may have hearing aids or cochlear implants that amplify sound. Don’t scare them by auto-playing audio which can make them uncomfortable or even painful.  _ Bich – Creative Tribe Leader
  2. Consider sign language: For individuals who use sign language as their primary means of communication, providing sign language videos can be helpful. These videos should be clear and easy to understand. _ Truc – UX/UI designer
  3. Avoid phone verification: Many websites and applications use verification by phone calls as a means of confirming the user’s identity. Instead, utilize text-based methods like SMS or email. _ Tien – Graphic designer

Physical issues

Anyone with physical issues may have obstacles accessing web content and applications due to mobility or dexterity issues. Therefore, here are some tips for designing for individuals with physical disabilities:

12 tips to make your website more inclusive - Physical issues
  1. Consider one-finger tasks: Minimize the need for simultaneous actions such as pressing two buttons at once, pinching to zoom or scrolling a long page. Instead, why don’t you utilize Drop-down menus, Anchor links or Navigation with Slide-out, Breadcrumbs and Tabbed? _ Bich – Creative Tribe Leader
  2. Allow customizable menus: Allow users to create a personalized menu of frequently used actions at convenient positions, which can be a Floating menu (appears on top of the screen and can be moved around by the user) or a Contextual menu (appears when a user performs a specific action). _ Truc – UX/UI designer
  3. Leave some space: To ensure that touch targets are easy to interact with, designers should use a minimum touch target size of 44 pixels by 44 pixels, keep a minimum margin and padding of 8 pixels. At least 30% white space (also known as negative space) is recommended also.  _ Tien – Graphic designer

Intellectual issues

As many as 3 out of every 100 people have a cognitive disability. They may face challenges in understanding complex language, social cues or distractions by being hypersensitive or hyposensitive to certain sensory stimuli, such as loud noises, bright lights or fast movements. Therefore, here are some tips for designing for them:

12 tips to make your website more inclusive - Intellectual issues
  1. Get to the point: Avoid using jargon (technical terms, acronyms, slang,…), abstract concepts (metaphors, idioms, wordplay,…). Moreover, make the content short, break them up into smaller chunks, use bullet points and visual aids to convey information. _ Bich – Creative Tribe Leader
  2. Provide Chatbots: A study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders noted that chatbots are effective for children with autism, as they offer a structured and predictable environment and can be customized to individual users. _ Truc – UX/UI designer
  3. Less is more: Minimize the use of animations, flashing elements, pop-ups, auto-play videos, sound effects and too many contrasting colors. Some better replacements could be banners, static images, diagrams, flat illustrations, inline messages, tooltips, etc. _ Tien – Graphic designer

Many companies have dedicated teams or departments that focus specifically on accessibility and inclusive design for people with disabilities like Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook,… Do you want to tap into a product with full accessibility for everyone?

_ Bạn D.K – IT

Definitely, there could be a variety of content at once! You may handle as many various sorts of content as you need with the support of a CMS platform.

CMS meaning – Why should you care?

  • CMS enables non-developers and everyone:

Usually, to make a change, even a simple content update, you have to download code files from the server, fix the HTML code by hand, then upload it back to the server. This is such a tricky process. With CMS software, you will be able to create, manage, edit, and launch content through a friendly interface everyone can use.

  • CMS makes teamwork easier and safer:

Many users can access and work on the back end of a CMS at the same time, which helps improve workflows and productivity throughout your company. With CMS user management, you can control what your members do and don’t. For instance, content creators can have all the rights necessary to modify content, but they won’t be able to uninstall plugins or otherwise radically alter the function of the website.

What is Open source CMS?

An open source CMS makes the codebase of software available to everyone. As a result, your business with access to the source code can change the software and add any features they require. You can check out open source CMS software for free, with no licensing, upgrade fees or contracts. However, some services may incur expenses, such as:

  • Technical assistance with installation and setup
  • Software customization outside of the basic offering
  • Templates, add-ons, and plug-ins
  • Management and staff training
  • User support, such as regular CMS software updates

Although open source CMS helps your business optimize the cost and the modules continually improve by community, they sometimes face attacks as anyone can see the code.

What is Proprietary CMS?

Commercial CMS is another term for proprietary CMS. Opposite to open source CMS, proprietary CMS is created and controlled under a single business and closed to the public. If you currently have a website or back-end system, it may be more difficult and costly.

If you choose a proprietary CMS controlled by the other company, you will know exactly who to take responsibility for if there is a problem. The main downside of a proprietary CMS is that your reliance on others makes switching more difficult and expensive.

Examples of proprietary CMS platforms:

What is Headless CMS?

Traditional CMS gave non-tech users a chance to set up their content in the era of website browser building. However, because they were not made to keep up with trendy technology, we now require a Headless CMS as a result of new devices and displays being born (mobile apps, IoT,…) besides the website.

But how does Headless CMS work? While traditional CMS sets up your content in one place for both “backend” and “front-end”,  a headless CMS manages the content at the backend and publishes it on the front-end through an API. In this way, you can display content on any device because they are independent.

Headless CMS unifies content into a single content hub,  eliminates manual processes like copy and pasting and makes content reusability a breeze on different cases, campaigns or devices. In other words, Headless CMS can easily apply the COPE principle: Create Once, Publish Everywhere.

Best CMS – Pick the right!

Any new CMS is a big effort that will influence numerous aspects of your organization. Make sure you receive input and buy-in from a diverse panel and be prepared to hear divergent viewpoints. While IT will want to take a technical approach to lower risks, marketing will be keen to get started on content creation.

If your organization lacks strong in-house developers, you should consider hiring an implementation partner or agency. They will assist you in selecting a CMS and ensuring that it fits into a bigger digital strategy. After the first installation, many partners continue to provide assistance.

What is SSL certificate? – Simple explanation for non-tech people

What is SSL certificate? - Simple explanation for non-tech people

What is an SSL certificate? Simply put, it’s a security measure that encrypts data transmitted between a web server and a browser. Whether you’re buying an SSL certificate or looking for a free one, it’s important to ensure the safety and protection of your website visitors.

What is the meaning of SSL Certificate?

Have you ever wondered about the diff between HTTP and HTTPS?

What is the meaning of SSL Certificate?

While surfing websites that asked for sensitive information, such as login credentials, credit card numbers, etc., perhaps you noticed the extra “s”. But what does it mean? Simply explained, the “s” indicates that your connection to that website is safe, encrypted and that any data you provide is exchanged with the website in a secure way. This technology is known as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) – a digital certificate that authenticates a website’s identity and enables an encrypted connection.

As the data exchanged between web servers and browsers is sent in plain text, you are open to eavesdropping. In this instance, the SSL decides how the link and the data being transmitted are encrypted.

How does an SSL certificate work?

The most significant aspect of an SSL certificate is that it has been digitally signed by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA), such as Let’s Encrypt, GoDaddy, HubSpot or DigiCert,… Everyone can create a certificate, but browsers will only accept certificates from organizations on their trusted CA list. To be considered a reliable CA, an organization must comply with and be audited against the browsers’ security and authentication standards.

How does an SSL certificate work?

An SSL certificate is given by a CA to an organization and its domain name certifies that the identity of that organization has been confirmed by a trustworthy third party. Because the browser trusts the CA, it now trusts the identity of that company as well. The browser informs users that the website is secured with SSL, so they can browse the site and even enter confidential information with confidence. A “not secure website” warning may also cause your visitors to be doubtful, which will reduce traffic and revenue.

What type of SSL certificate do I need? - Cert type distinction

Here are the 5 types of SSL Certificates to consider:

1. Extended Validation Certificates (EV SSL)

The highest-ranking and most expensive SSL certificate type, requires website owners to go through a strict identity verification process, and is typically used by large websites that require a lot of personal information (e.g., banks or medical providers).

2. Organization Validated Certificates (OV SSL)

The second-highest in price and assurance, with a substantial validation process that is frequently used for commercial and public-facing websites that gather and retain consumer information (e.g., web apps).

3. Domain Validated Certificates (DV SSL)

The least expensive, with low assurance and limited encryption, the process just requires establishing domain ownership by responding to an email or phone call, and is mostly used by blogs or informational websites.

4. Wildcard SSL Certificates

To secure a base domain and infinite subdomains, cheaper than several single-domain certificates when you need encryption for multiple domains.

5. Multi-Domain SSL Certificates (MDC)

Secure up to 100 different domain names and subdomains with a single certificate, saving time and money; commonly used by businesses with multiple jurisdiction representations.

Can I have a Self-signed certificate?

Can I have a Self-signed certificate?

Yes! Everyone is able to create a certificate, as we mentioned earlier. A Self-signed SSL certificate is not issued by a Certificate Authority (CA) that is recognized. Instead, the duty will fall on the website’s developer or host. What makes them effective if implementing them in a production environment will sharply reduce the volume of visitors to your website and damage user confidence?

Compared to other techniques for creating certificates, creating self-signed certificates is fairly simple. No complex procedures are required, and there is no dependency on a third party. In test environments or for applications that just require private recognition, self-signed certificates work best.  “Private recognition” means the certificate won’t be recognized outside of the organization and will just be used on the device or within the company where it was created.

How to buy SSL Certificate?

1. Use ICANN Lookup to confirm your website information

Make sure your ICANN Lookup record is current and matches the information you’re providing to the Certificate Authority before submitting an application for an SSL certificate. Look up your name server, registrar details, and authoritative servers using the ICANN lookup tool.

2. Create the Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

The CSR provides data that the Certificate Authority (CA) will use to produce your certificates, such as your common name, organization, and country. You must first create a Certificate Signing Request before you can locate a certificate authority. You can accomplish this using your Server, cPanel, or an online CSR generator like DigiCert CSR Wizard.

3. Put the certificate on your website

Install the certificate on your website, and then finish. CPanel is the greatest tool for accomplishing this. You might not need to manually install the certificate if you purchased an SSL through your hosting company because it may already be there.

Is it possible to own a free SSL certificate?

Aside from Self-signed certificates, here are 5 factors to consider while installing a free SSL certificate issued by a CA:

Is it possible to own a free SSL certificate?

Not for all: Free SSL certificates are not good for dedicated business owners and website owners, who should use cert type like Organization Validated or Extended Validation certificates.

For domain validation only: This is suitable for tiny websites and blogs that do not require data collection from visitors with minimal authentication.

Limited Validity Time -: A basic free SSL certificate issued by a CA has a validity period of 30 to 90 days, and website owners must renew the certificates regularly.

No Technical Support: Because it is free, consumers cannot anticipate technical support when problems arise. They might self-search on forums for advice and recommendations on how to resolve SSL-related issues.

No guarantee: In the past, there have been reports of free SSL certificates causing severe cybersecurity risks. When it occurs, the guarantee is used as a last chance to restore the company’s website or get offset.

How to pick brand colors?

Branding color schemes can have 1-4 colors depending, but even a mono scheme requires some various shades for different purposes. After already know about your industry and target audience, there is 3 steps to build your brand identity color palette:

1. Pick your Primary: Usually, the primary color will be the color that represents the brand personality. Depending on the identifier, there will be from 1 to 2 colors selected as the primary color. For example, we see Facebook is blue and white, Netflix is red and black. Other colors in the palette must follow then.

2. Pick your Accent: An accent color is an added color, it usually contrasts or complements the primary color used. Accent colors are used for emphasis, to enhance a color palette, or to liven up or add excitement to an otherwise monochromatic scheme.

3. Pick your Neutral: Your neutral color will most likely be in the background, something designed to intentionally limit attention or relieve viewers. They are usually various shades of gray, beige, white, and off-white. Black is fine also, but be aware that it tends to dominate any color scheme and steal the spotlight.

Normally in design, the ratio between Primary – Accent – Neutral should be 60% – 10% – 30%. If you don’t know how to make a perfect color combination, use a color palette generator. Moreover, all other color rules throughout designing will be included in the branding package.

Build brand style guide – hard but worth

Brand style guide, brand guideline or brand book is a guide and principles on the use of brand elements in the communication and manage your brand assets. This brand style guide will also point out what you shouldn’t apply to your brand identity elements. 3 why make a brand style guide important:

Internal communication: Company employees, especially newbies, cannot understand 100% of their brand elements if only through the website or social media, and even their colleagues cannot spend hours explaining everything of brand identity design. So, a brand guideline will be an effective tool to convey brand story and personality to members.

Brand consistency: Designers often change some brand identities to adapt to different uses. Commonly, the black and white logo version is still used if the origin is not suitable. But what changes are acceptable, and what makes your brand recognition destroyed? The logo guidelines in the brand book would tell you.
